Coursera redesign

I redesigned the Coursera app to improve learner retention by enhancing user experience, navigation, motivation, and progress tracking. Many learners struggle to complete courses due to unclear navigation, lack of motivation, and poor progress tracking. My goal was to create a more intuitive and engaging platform that helps users stay on track and successfully complete their courses.

My roles:

  • UX/UI Designer – Researched, created wireframes, and designed high-fidelity mockups.

  • Designed an improved information architecture to streamline navigation and make the app more intuitive

  • User Researcher – Identified pain points by analyzing user behavior and feedback.

  • Visual Designer – Ensured a clean, modern, and engaging visual identity aligned with Coursera’s brand.

App overview:

Coursera is a popular online learning platform offering courses, certificates, and degrees from top universities and companies worldwide. The platform enables users to learn new skills at their own pace, with access to various courses in diverse fields. However, many users face challenges with course completion due to unclear navigation, low motivation, and insufficient progress tracking features.

I aimed to address these issues in my redesign by creating a more intuitive, user-friendly experience that keeps learners engaged and on track. The new design focuses on:

  • Enhanced Navigation – Simplified and streamlined course selection, dashboard, and settings for a more effortless learning experience.

  • Improved Progress Tracking – Added visual indicators and milestones to motivate users and show tangible progress.

  • Personalized Motivation – Introduced custom reminders and goal-setting features to keep learners focused and motivated.

  • Interactive Features – Integrated micro-interactions to make the app feel more dynamic and engaging.

The result is a more cohesive and engaging platform that helps users stay motivated and complete their courses.

Design Process

Research:

To begin the redesign, I sketched a site map to visualize the app’s functionality and user flow. This hands-on approach helped me quickly iterate and organize ideas, ensuring a clear and intuitive structure.

With this map solidified, I defined the Information Architecture to detail the layout and relationships between various sections. From there, I designed wireframes and translated them into a cohesive, visually engaging interface aligned with the project’s objectives.

Problem:

Many learners enthusiastically begin online courses but drop out due to the need for more intuitive functionality and practical features in most learning platforms. Based on personal experience and conversations with friends, I observed that many turn to YouTube tutorials after abandoning courses on platforms like Coursera. It’s not a lack of interest in learning — apps like Duolingo excel at retaining users through motivational elements like rewards and engaging sounds without feeling overly childish. While Coursera’s platform works well, there is room to make the learning process more engaging and rewarding. With this redesign, I aim to create a more functional and practical user experience that keeps learners motivated to complete their courses.

Goal:

Enhance learner retention by creating a more user-friendly and supportive learning environment within the Coursera app.

Key outcomes:

  • Reduce dropout rates

  • Increase course completion rates

  • Improve overall user satisfaction
